Public art project: Boards for the new construction fence
Returning for the first time since fall 2004, the 14th Annual George Ohr Fall Festival of Arts will be held Sept. 29-30 on the Biloxi Town Green. The Festival is sponsored by the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art and the City of Biloxi. A number of long-time Festival participants will be on hand, including a coterie of blacksmiths (Ohr’s father was a blacksmith in mid 19th century Biloxi), the Raku booth run by Brian Nettles and friends, a lemonade stand in honor of Pleasant Reed, and “Art in Public Places”—as well as many local and regional artists.
Registration for booths may be made online or by calling Trish Lawrence or Holly Zinner at 228.374.5547; the booth fee is $125 until Sept. 7, after that it goes up to $150. Electricity is $25. There is a special juried section for fine artists and craftsmen; the deadline for entry into the juried section is also Sept. 7. The juried section provides cash awards to selected artists; a juror will be announced soon. Awards are: $1000 first; $500 second; $250 third; and a $100 Mad Potters’ Award. All information on registration may be found online at www.georgeohr.org.
The Festival is a family-based event, with numerous crafts-making events and competitions, attracting a few thousand visitors each year. Funds raised at the Festival support education and exhibits at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art. Among the most popular contests are the Potters’ Games, during which professional and amateur potters compete to make a pot blind-folded, build the largest pot the fastest, and similar games. There is also a Celebrity Throw, with local celebrities invited to make a pot.
Highly popular with families is the Best Mustache Contest, which this year will have the annual competition for adults and a new one for youngsters. The Art in Public Places event, held Sept. 29, provides young and old a chance to paint a plywood board for the construction fence at the new museum building site. There will also be tshirt painting and pinch pots, as well as the large, busy Children’s Art Tent, overseen by museum educator-potter Sara Miller and her volunteers. New this year will be a scrapbooking tent, with additional scrapbooking workshops offered throughout the weekend. There will also be great local food and entertainers on the main stage all weekend long. Also available will be a widescreen TV for fall football fans.
A poster contest is currently under way, with a deadline of August 10. The winning artist will receive $300 and will be on hand both days of Festival to autograph limited edition posters, which have become great collectibles. Festival tshirts, based on the design, will also be sold.
The Festival, always an early harbinger of the holiday shopping season, will feature artists and craftsmen with works ranging from pottery to paintings to photography and many other media. Chairman of the Festival for 10 years has been the indefatigable Paula April, a member of the museum’s Board of Trustees. Numerous other board members and city of Biloxi officials, as well as an army of volunteers and supporters, also work on the Festival each year.
